Parotid Duct Ligation and Tympanic Neurectomy

In Chronic Recurrent Parotiditis

William R. Morgan, MD

Arch Otolaryngol. 1973;98(3):179-182.

Abstract

Excision of the parasympathetic secretomotor nerve of the parotid gland as it crosses the promontory in the middle ear may reduce secretion of the gland and thus lessen the morbidity associated with parotid duct ligation. This report consists of a clinical assessment of six patients with chronic recurrent parotiditis who were treated by parotid duct ligation combined with tympanic neurectomy. The development of this technique and the results of its application are presented. All patients have been followed for more than four years, and their symptoms have been controlled.
