Abstract
The worldwide literature on the subject of tympanoplasty from 1968 through 1971 is reviewed. Included are summaries of surgical techniques for correcting stenosis of the eustachian tube. The problem of drumhead retraction pockets is discussed in detail along with surgical methods of preventing its occurrence.

Different methods of tympanoplasty are outlined with special attention given towards staged surgery and the use of various types of grafts. Newer methods of mastoid bowl obliteration are also reported.

Several papers discuss the pros and cons of preserving the posterior bony canal wall. New methods of rebuilding the posterior canal in mastoidectomy cavities are demonstrated. Results of the first homograft drums are given along with descriptions of the different techniques and indications for choosing this procedure.
