Standard Evaluation of the Reactive Nystagmus
Nicholas Torok, MD
Arch Otolaryngol. 1972;96(5):448-452.
Abstract
Equidistant cold and hot stimulation was applied in 32 young adults with normal hearing and without previous ear disease. The intensity of the recorded nystagmic responses were analyzed using the frequency count at the culmination and an attempt was made to quantify the subjective sensations evoked by these stimulations. The responses spread over a wide range. The mean values and standard deviations of the cold and warm effects showed significant differences, whereas no differences were found between the right and left stimulation responses. The equidistant warm stimulus created a more intense nystagmic response and elicited a stronger objective sensation than the cold; the strength of the nystagmus intensity and strength of sensation showed remarkable correlation.
