A Histochemical Evaluation

Abstract
Seventeen cases of minor gland mucoepidermoid carcinoma were evaluated histochemically in relation to histologic grade of malignancy and glandular site of origin. Tumor mucous cells do not yield distinct, monospecific staining characteristics and thus histochemical evaluation is of no prognostic significance for assessing grade of malignancy. Additionally, staining by tumor mucous cells does not compare nor correlate with staining characteristics of the glandular site of origin. Mucoepidermoid carcinoma is capable of synthesizing a heterogeneous population of tumor mucins despite variations in grade of malignancy as it pertains to histodifferentiation.
