Otogenic Intracranial Complications

Brian L. Wolfowitz, FRCS (Edin)

Arch Otolaryngol. 1972;96(3):220-222.

Abstract

Twenty-eight consecutive cases of otogenic intracranial complications occurring in South African Negroes are reviewed. These cases are evaluated with regard to incidence, bacteriology, pathology, clinical features, prognosis, and treatment. Intracranial complications occur frequently in a population where otitis media is neglected. Antibiotics have decreased the incidence and mortality rate, but surgery remains the cornerstone of therapy and should be undertaken with minimal delay.
