Musculoperiosteal Flap in Cavity Obliteration

Histopathological Study Seven Years Postoperatively

Tauno Palva, MD; Antti Palva, MD; Juhani Kärjä, MD

Arch Otolaryngol. 1972;95(2):172-177.

Abstract

Histopathological data are presented in a case treated by tympanomastoidectomy with partial removal of the bony posterior ear canal wall and obliteration of the mastoid cavity seven years previously. The meatally based postauricular flap conformed to the size of the cavity and consisted partly of viable fat and partly of connective tissue with collagen, reticulin and elastin fibers. The histological results testified of the safety of the obliteration operation and of the suitability of the advocated flap to accomplish cavity occlusion.
