Postlaryngectomy Vocal Rehabilitation
William W. Montgomery, MD
Arch Otolaryngol. 1972;95(1):76-83.
Abstract
Vocal rehabilitation is one of the most important aspects of the therapy offered to the laryngectomee. A one-stage operation for vocal rehabilitation, following total laryngectomy can aid this process. A mucous membrane communication between the hypopharynx and an anterior cervical cutaneous trephine incision is constructed during laryngectomy repair. The operation following laryngectomy involves the construction of a skin tube between the tracheostoma and pharyngostoma. A silicone tracheal tube is used for a short period following this reconstruction to facilitate the initiation of phonation. Experience with this procedure in 31 consecutive laryngectomies is discussed.
