Ototoxicity of Tobramycin in Guinea Pigs

Robert E. Brummett, PhD; Mary M. Meikle, PhD; Jack A. Vernon, PhD

Arch Otolaryngol. 1971;94(1):59-63.

Abstract

It has been demonstrated that tobramycin (nebramycin [factor 6]) can be toxic to the guinea pig cochlea. The damage was evident in both the sensitivity and intensity functions of the alternating current cochlear potential. Histological verification of the electrophysiological evaluation was obtained. The damage to the cochlea was seen in the hair cells of Corti's organ. This ototoxic effect was not uniform in all animals. Some guinea pigs were severely affected while in others no abnormality was detected.
