Parotid Swelling and School Phobia
Capt Jonathan B. Rosefsky, MC

Abstract
An 8-year-old boy with a history of mumps virus and bacterial parotitis had recurrent parotid swelling in the morning associated with dislike of school. The swelling increased with a parasympatholytic drug (atropine) and was prevented by bethanecholchloride, a parasympathomimetic. Psychiatric interviews probably aided in relieving tension and anxiety, and eventually bethanechol was no longer needed. It can be placed in a pharmacologic schema, yet its placebo value may be of importance.
