Ototoxic Effects of Gentamicin

Robert M. Meyers, MD

Arch Otolaryngol. 1970;92(2):160-162.

Abstract

Gentamicin is an ototoxic drug which affects the vestibular system predominantly. In one of our patients, it was known to produce a cochlear losssas well. The manifestations may be transient, unilateral, and occur almost exclusively in patients with impaired renal function. A study of 40 cases revealed that five patients had a presumed ototoxic effect, and an additional five had a definite ototoxic effect. The incidence of oiden ries s considerably higher than can usually be expected with gentamicin treatment, as the maximum daily dose presently recommended (1 ose presented, and all patients who exhibited ceeded were eithexhibited or azotemic.al no dose adjustments were made for patients with poor renal function. No significant pro with were encountered when recommended doses were useen
