Abstract
During a stapedectomy, retrieving the lost heavy foot-plate fragment, which has disappeared from sight under the inferior or posterior margin of the oval window, is a must if the surgeon is to avoid serious hearing loss or vertigo in his patient postoperatively. In the six cases presented here the lost fragment was successfully removed after introducing blood into the oval window. The clot which formed delivered the fragment into view and permitted its subsequent removal. No injury to the ear resulted from this technique, and the postoperative results have been satisfactory in all cases.
