Experimental Cholesterol Granuloma

Thomas S. Main, MD; Tadao Shimada, MD; David J. Lim, MD

Arch Otolaryngol. 1970;91(4):356-359.

Abstract

Cholesterol granulomas were produced in the mastoid cavity of the squirrel monkey by obstructing the eustachian tube with silicone-rubber (Silastic) sponges. It was noted that these granulomas developed only in the mastoid cells, which is suggestive that isolation of hemorrhage in a small area without ventilation is an important factor in the genesis of cholesterol granulomas. Our experiment favors the concept that hemorrhage in mastoid air cells, possibly due to negative pressure, has a vital role in the pathogenesis of this disease.
