Multifocal Papillary Thyroid Carcinoma Arising in a Lingual Thyroid

A Case Report

Bradley Goldstein, MD; William H. Westra, MD; Joseph Califano, MD

Arch Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg. 2002;128:1198-1200.

We report the first case (to our knowledge) of a multifocal papillary thyroid carcinoma arising in a lingual thyroid. The patient underwent a transcervical, transhyoid approach for excision, followed by radioiodine ablation, with excellent functional and oncologic results. We also discuss the management, diagnosis, and historical background of a malignant neoplasm arising in a lingual thyroid.

From the Departments of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (Drs Goldstein and Califano) and Pathology (Dr Westra), Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions, Baltimore, Md.
