Nasal Cryptococcosis

Deane R. Briggs, MD; Philip L. Barney, MD; Raja M. Bahu, MD

Arch Otolaryngol. 1974;100(5):390-392.

Abstract

An unusual case of cryptococcosis occurred as an ulcerating mass in the nasal vestibule, with subsequent development of meningoencephalitis. This disease usually occurs with neurological or pulmonary symptoms and rarely as an otolaryngologic disease. Biopsy of the nasal mass with special histochemical stains and india ink preparations confirmed the diagnosis.

Treatment with amphotericin B and flucytosine was monitored using specific slide latex agglutination tests. Complete resolution of the disease in this patient supports the use of flucytosine in treating Cryptococcus neoformans infections.
