Audiologic Evaluation in Cochlear and Eighth Nerve Disorders

Jay W. Sanders, PhD; Anne Forrest Josey, MS; Michael E. Glasscock, III, MD

Arch Otolaryngol. 1974;100(4):283-289.

Abstract

Although the contribution of special auditory testing in the determination of site of lesion in patients with sensorineural hearing loss has been well established, there is need for ongoing investigation. A comparative evaluation of eight audiometric procedures with 100 cochlear lesion patients and 27 patients with confirmed eighth nerve tumors was made. Although the individual tests continue to be less than 100% accurate in prediction, the pattern of results obtained from the test battery continues to show a high correlation with site of lesion.
