Endonasal Dacryocystorhinostomy

Abstract
One hundred twenty-six endonasal dacryocystorhinostomies were performed on 109 patients, the number of bilateral cases being 17. The primary success rate was 83%. The great majority of operations were made by resident surgeons. After revision operations a patent dacryocystorhinostoma was reached in 96%; in one case the lacrimal passages remained closed after revision. Stenosis of the dacryocystorhinostoma developed during the first four postoperative months and was usually caused by simple scarring of the window. By using careful operative technique and postoperative check-ups during the first months, most of the failures can be avoided. Endonasal dacryocystorhinostomy has many advantages over the external approach. In experienced hands the success rate is equal in both methods.
